That's the plan - "discourage" people from personal car ownership.

They won't invent self-driving motorcycles so I'll be still riding if I can still walk!

Self Drive Cars..Autopilot V9

Unread post by NewcastleFalcon »

I thought it was interesting a couple of months ago when Elon Musk announced that problems with the Model 3's braking performance would be fixed by a "Software" update.

No army of mechanics, and engineers tweaking the "hardware" of the braking mechanisms and components and metaphorically getting their hands dirty.

Its the same sort of thing with TESLA's Autopilot.....full self drivng capability comes courtesy of...a software update.

“To date, Autopilot resources have rightly focused entirely on safety. With V9, we will begin to enable full self-driving features,” Musk tweeted on Sunday, referring to the latest version of the Autopilot programme, in response to a Twitter user.

Whether we like it or not cars are becoming more and more a tech product heading the way of smartphones but lets hope there remains the car equivalent of the £1 phone on PAYG which does texts and calls and not much else for the likes of me!

"Please do not apply brakes or move the steering wheel during the Software Update . .. ..."

And if the firmware update gets interrupted, you brick your car!

I want a self driving van. I could get an extra 2 hours snooze on the drive to work.
But as for a personal car.... I'm not sure.

Looks like drivers will have to be trained how to use (semi) autonomous cars too!

That could be a person not a third car.

Pedestrian steps into the road, first driver swerves the car round, second hits.

Although to be fair, most human drivers would have reacted in a similar manner.

I'm not so sure - with a human driver (well in my case anyway) I keep eyes ahead, but also look through the windscreen of the vehicle in front where possible and also keep more to the right of my lane so I can see ahead of the vehicle in front - this is not something an automated car can do. It can't anticipate and cannot see as far ahead as the human eye can IMO.

Now the issue is very clouded as noted in the video - once over the 'trust' issue, will drivers become complacent and forget about their responsibilities - come on - for goodness sake are we in control or not and if we are still supposed to be in full control, what is the flipping point in the first place. You may as well just stick with safety aids and leave the driver in control. That Tesla in the second run did not even look as though it was even attempting to slow down, yet alone stop.

No thanks Mr Musk, perhaps you should go into the perfume market instead.

Baidu "mass producing" Buses without steering wheels.

An "Internet Service Provider" wasn't even a job when I was growing up....nevermind one that also makes buses!
