Should be easy enough to check by turning the wheel and seeing which size.

Generally it is resistance. When the pad starts wearing down to within few millimetres, the sensor wiring in the pad starts to wear and this causes the resistance value to change, which sends this info back to the ESP ECU via the brake pad wear harness.

Hi,

I have a 2008 Citroen 1.6hdi with wear sensor on both wheels.

Are you sure it is resistance measurement? I have new pads and new sensors, and when I measure the resistance between the two sensor cables I get very close to zero ohm.

I have a "Brake pad wear" error/service message on mine that I can not reset.

I am suspect there to be a wire break between one of the sensors and the ESP ECU. Does anyone know where I can find the right eletrical diagram for my car, or can anybody show me the diagram page with the wiring from sensor 4430 and 4431 and the ESP ECU?

There is a technical bulletin for X7 Estates concerning either a short or break in the harness.

The brake pad wear harness connector is cut at the main harness end, or there is a short circuit of the earth wire in the brake pad wear harness connector.

Check: Checking of the right-hand and left-hand wheels for the presence and electrical continuity of the 2-way connectors of the brake pad wear harness.
Removal or replacement of the connector that is faulty with an after sales brake pad wear harness.

Parts required
1 Connector harness repair kit (Part number 6599.KN).
2 heat-seal sleeves (Raychem) (Part number 9488 A7).
1 Heat-shrink sleeve (Diameter 13 mm and length 50 mm).

Repair
Vehicles with 2 connectors on the right-hand and left-hand wheels
pad a.PNG
  • Remove the connector (1) that is faulty.
  • Unscrew the earth (2).
pad b.PNG
  • Cut the brake pad wear harness (3) as close as possible to the fixing (4) (at "a").
  • Insulate the wires of the brake pad wear harness ; Using a heat-shrink sleeve.
Vehicles with only one connector
Apply the connector harness repair kit.

N.B.: From build code 11937, vehicles will have only one connector on the left-hand side.
pad c.PNG
  • Cut the harness (3) as close as possible to the taping (5) (at "b").
  • Unscrew the earth (2).
pad d.PNG
  • Create a direct wire-to-wire link, joining the brake pad wear harness (3) with the connector harness (7) of the connector harness repair kit using 2 (6) sleeves.
  • Tape the brake pad wear harness at the link.
  • Screw back the earth.

Thanks a lot for the helpful reply :)

It was actually bad earth connection from the socket you connect the sensor leads to and where it is bolted to metal (Number 2 in the pictures).

I have a related question, rather than start a new thread I thought I'd post it here to help make it more useful :rofl2:

So during some unrelated work on my suspension, I have discovered that like the original poster, my car appears to have had the brake pad wear sensors snipped off... as can be seen below:

But frustratingly, if you look at the plug, it has one core up to an earth point, but nothing else... I think the flexi hose hanging in free air near is is probably what should be connected :?

Is the connector available separately, and if so is is possible to replace it?
