I doubt it will hold up under the pressure to be honest.
Please note, I'm no longer active on the Forum, so won't respond to messages.

Yes, the ram is scrap as it is so why not have a go. Nothing to loose
It'll be most interesting to hear the result...

Re: Xantia steering rack seal
Could a thread be cut on the ram body and a collar fitted to hold the seal in place ?

Now that's a cracking idea Alasdair... No problem to cut a suitable thread on a lathe and make up a suitable threaded collar...

Re: Xantia steering rack seal
Will give it a go, nevertheless. Just out of curiosity to see how it's made inside if it will not work.
Was thinking about a thread also as I've seen it done before. So that should work and it would also work for activa rams...
EDIT: There must be also room for the return collar, so the threaded collar should be smaller than this on the picture...

Re: Xantia steering rack seal
I'm also surprised that there is no gaiter to shield the cylinder, juts some plastic bag is wrapped around it... And that is factory made!

That is an Activa front ram... Good mod...
Yes, the collar must be quite slim but that should not present a problem...

Re: Xantia steering rack seal
So all of you who threw away any of the activa rams be aware! They can be repaired!
If they are not to bad damaged on the inside it should be simple job. Cut it open, make a collar, thread cut to the body, change o-rings inside, assemble, job done! Wait, wait, wait... That simple? Can't be. There is a cath somewhere... I bet there is!

Re: Xantia steering rack seal
I've only ever thrown away one Activa ram and that was an irrepairable one because it had a scored piston..
I've been repairing them for years...
My website pages on doing the job...

Re: Xantia steering rack seal
I'm quite aware of you page Sir Jim
It's the problem if it has too much internal leak, and that you must change the inside o-rings. Not possible without cutting it open (IIRC)...

If the piston is good then it's worth doing, given they're now NFP and as rare as hen's teeth... I still have a few that are repairable should they ever be needed...

Re: Xantia steering rack seal
For the collar repair, you could save a bit of machining time by drilling an fitting a couple of tangential pins, rather than threading.

Re: Xantia steering rack seal
Did anyone try to fit a gaiter on the steering cylinder? If so what part number did you use?
As I'm going to change my steering cylinder I would like to fit a gaiter on as the plastic wrapped around it has perished...

Re: Xantia steering rack seal
The gaiter is identical to the XM one Xantos, the same ones as I've used in the past for Activa Ram repairs..
Part Number 95 640 212
Be aware they are not listed as available for the Xantia but trust me the XM one is the same...

Re: Xantia steering rack seal
Yes I know that, but you misunderstood me... I'm trying to protect the cylinder itself (see arrow) and put a gaiter on like the ones that are shown on the steering rack (left and right).
