I have the same problem.
my C5 x7 is 2011 and has a metal suspension
it had a leaking steering rack. I took off the rack and took it to the machine shop for repair. after repair and assembly, my steering wheel was moved slightly to the left (about 15-20 degrees) and I had an ESP error. then the car was driven to align the wheels and the ESP problems disappeared and the steering wheel was standing straight. after returning the steering rack from repair and installation on the car I have a problem with the steering wheel. at times it is soft and at times hard and I feel the steering wheel twitch. the guy who did the rack repair tells me that there is air in the system and that is why my steering wheel is occasionally hard or that I have a problem with the hydraulic pump. I note that before removing the rack, except for the leak, I did not have any problems and it is a little strange that the pump broke down because no work was done on it.
the diagnostic device does not display any error, but my car after returning the rack from service is not the same.

is there, perhaps, a special bleeding procedure for power steering system.

Here you go:

Metallic suspension
  • Start the engine.
  • Turn on the engine and let it idle for 2 to 3 minutes, without moving the steering wheel (Top up with oil if necessary to the levels shown on the reservoir).
  • Move the steering slowly, from stop to stop, in both directions, 10 or so times, with the wheels on the ground.
N.B.: Do not hold the steering on the stop in order to prevent the opening of the pressure limiter.
  • Check there are no bubbles in the tank.
  • Top up the power steering fluid to the maximum level of the tank.
  • If some bubbles are present in the tank, allow it to degas completely ( 3 to 5 minutes), engine running without moving the steering wheel.
  • Carry out 5 new movements of the steering slowly, from stop to stop, in both directions, with the wheels on the ground.
  • Repeat this phase until the bubbles completely disappear from the surface of the fluid in the tank.
  • Carry out a road test and check the level of power steering fluid (With the engine stopped, and the cap screwed on, oil temperature 30°C).
N.B. : There must be no bubbles in the tank, otherwise repeat the bleeding procedure.
