So do I... Couple it with a 4HP20 and discover perfection... Almost... To achieve full perfection it would need hydraulic suspension....

Engine change is also 15 hours.... Official route is out the bottom, so subframe out; however, with no A/C in the way I would be tempted to take it out the front if I was doing it on the drive.

Had a similar issue on a expert 2.0 HDI a few years back, coolant hoses were rock solid when cold, loads of pressure in the tank as well, but running fine, no mixing of oil/water,
head gasket had failed

Not quite perfect (to my mind). For that you would also need a good adaptive four wheel drive system as well (which could be useful up in the wilds of Scotland).

Bike rack, or bike trailer (with a cordon bleu kitchen facility)?

You can fit at least 3 bikes in the back of one without a rack or dismantling them at all. With wheels removed, 2 will fit in the boot without putting the seats down :D

131000. I'm heading off to get it diagnosed properly by a garage shortly and get an idea of what they say about repair costs.

That is a bummer after doing axle. This seems to be the only issue with 8v hdi. Heard of a few round about 150k. Still it is a lot of heating and cooling over the years, then possibly no coolant changes. Winter time for doing it 'aint good either Davie, you'll be freezing up there likely.

I'd bet you won't get an estimate below £1500 and if you do you best be wary that they won't stick to the estimate.

I think it's probably mostly to do with the book labour times for getting the head off and back on again. But yes, as far as costs for a head gasket job that is pretty scary!

I think it's more to do with experience, if they've done one before and it turned into a nightmare, as these can, they will estimate high and hope you go away.

If they estimate low and it then turns into a nightmare they'll tell you it was an estimate not a quote and you'll be lumbered with whatever the final cost turns out to be.

My local indy who has been doing Citroens for fifty years simply declines to do head gaskets on HDis.

Just like my old (now long gone) local Citroen Indy always refused point-blank to do Xantia swivel joints...

Can't say as I ever blamed him...
