Synergie loose spring in engine bay

We got our Synergie 1.9TD brand new in 1998 (still got it). I think the first service/check was at 1000 miles in those days. I complained that the RPM stayed high for too long when you took your foot off the pedal, mechanic said ah - its the damper, they all do that, we take them off. So he did, so I've never even seen one, thanks for the photo

(Without the damper, if you are trundling along slowly in 1st or 2nd and take your foot off the pedal it lurches a bit, so I can see why they fitted them)

Mine does exactly that rich! Have to keep an eye on the revs as it will just kangaroo!

there is also a little random damper that sits behind the pump, seems to dampen the return to idle and mine doesnt work anymore. wether its related or not i won't know!

it only ever seems to be if i'm using very little throttle at all (just above idle) so maybe it's something to do with the pump?

My first xantia came with the damper. I thought it was dangerous as the last 1000 revs fell slowly and it felt similar to braking with a foot lightly on the accelerator. After removing it the car would bounce a little at the front if I took my foot off the accelerator to rapidly. I've only ever had xud9 xantias and no other with the damper. Everyone of them has done the little bounce if I back off the throttle too fast. It's not just a xantia thing as my xud9 Ldv and my 306s did it too.

I don't really think it's so different to any engine. Take your foot off the accelerator quickly and they all bounce a bit, do it smoothly and they don't. I think it's the movement in the engine mounts causing the sensation. With the xud being relatively heavy maybe it's a bigger force change and hence more noticeable.

Bigger lump will resist movement more (inertia), but - you are right - it'll thump when it does!
Had BX19RD and XM2.5 both develop excessive fore-aft engine movement, which was cured on the 2.5 by a new lower engine mount (under warranty) and on the BX by simply shimming under the rubber pyramid by 3mm or so.
All movement and 'bounce' promptly disappeared in both cases.
