Re: 110 Hdi post clutch gear change problem
I was told that the gear change cables were unclipped and the replaced in same position they came from. Job to imagine how they can be altered as there looks to be no adjustment on them. (unless I'm told otherwise). No problems with gear changing before hand.

Re: 110 Hdi post clutch gear change problem
It's not impossible the cable has taken a dislike to being disturbed, or has popped out of the clamp. ISTR that someone had similar trouble on a C5 and traced it to the cable.

Re: 110 Hdi post clutch gear change problem
Thanks for replies everyone. Can't get my hands on the car for a couple of days but will give the cables a good going over when I can. Just like to add that I'm fighting a rearguard action here in keeping this car on the road as my bosslady says it's time for a change.

Indeed, but we're (well I) am talking about the gear change operators NOT the clutch....citronut wrote:service citroen shows a hydraulically operated clutch on the OP's VIN Richard

My guess too, poorly adjusted or incorrectly fitted linkage if the problem's external, worn selector forks and synchro hubs if internal.RichardW wrote:Cable gear change on the ML5 box, Malc... seems the problem is present engine running or not, so it's not a clutch problem, it's a selector problem.

Good luck with getting it sorted, and with convincing 'er indoors that the car should stay. Just tell her that they're going up in value now and it'll be worth holding onto for a few more years to maximise profit, which could then be spent on holiday/spa/bingo/whatever her hobbies are

Xantias are not rising in value. Even mint ones.

Re: 110 Hdi post clutch gear change problem
I'm back on the case again. Checked gear change cables and I can't find anything out of place. There is positive movement between gear knob and gearbox ball joints with all clips in place and no movement of the outer sleeves. I also disconnected the ball joints on the box and selected 1st by hand which I was only able to do with difficulty a couple of times. This did at least eliminate and errors introduced via the cables. I would also like to add ( didn't say before) that that Ist and 3rd gears seem very close together making it easy to drop into 3rd when you don't want to. Am I back to a clutch release mechanism malfunction and or a bent arm? Your thoughts always welcome.

Re: 110 Hdi post clutch gear change problem
I would say theres something bent out of shape somewhere on the gearbox external linkages, they are a heavy awkward box to install so I can see how it might happen.

Re: 110 Hdi post clutch gear change problem
That part can't be clutch release bearing, must be something to do with the selector mechanism, surely.Edhertz wrote:I would also like to add ( didn't say before) that that Ist and 3rd gears seem very close together making it easy to drop into 3rd when you don't want to. Is the engine/box on this the same as on my c5? ('01 plate 110bhp Hdi). If so, I'm not far away, so you're welcome to come and compare if you like.
With any luck, after this weekend, I should have cleared my breaker off the ramp and be back to being able to take cars on/off it!

Re: 110 Hdi post clutch gear change problem
I agree with what you say. I cannot find anything external causing the problem so looks like must be inside. Not sure about the C5 engine and transmissions being similar to mine but I'm sure there are more knowledgeable people on here who do. Thanks for your offer to drop in, would welcome a second opinion from someone and have a look over a C5.
