Pretty simple really, headlamps need to be changed for driving on the left (electric tape covering the section of beam that points up will sort that if you haven't changed headlights yet) which sorts out the MOT but be aware that the French test doesn't go as far as the UK one.
Armed with a UK MOT certificate issued on the chassis number and a completed application form (V62) and £55 registration fee, I then went to the DVLA at Borehamwood complete with every bit of paperwork, French reg doc (Carte Gris) French MOT (Controle Technique) including the receipt for the car as despite France being in the EU you need to show that VAT has been paid on the car within the EU and/or it's value is low and the car quite old (can't recall how old). You must provide the original UK insurance certificate and UK MOT and ensure that the car is available for inspection should the DVLA wish to check it's identity. This will be done either by you trailering to car to the DVLA or by a local inspector, presumably now that the local DVLA centres have closed to a venue such as the local VOSA centre or even from where you reside Swansea. Due to the age and value of your Activa they more than likely won't bother with an inspection but you need to be prepared for one.
Once the paperwork was examined and everything agreed to be in order I was issued there and then with a UK registration number and a certificate allowing me to get UK plates made up. Once they were fitted to the car I could legally drive it, you don't need to wait for the V5 to arrive. I think that covers everything.
Re the type approval number have you looked on the Carte Gris?

As long as you could speak Greek (northern is a good substitute ) you might have been OK
When I got stopped for speeding on the M40 on it, they didn't even query the plate. The nice polite gentlemen in the car with colourful stripes were most interested in my licence, and it's removal from my possession for a period of time...
That would be the French type number (not type approval number), not directly applicable in the UK. From 1998, EC wide type approval numbers (15 digit I think) were introduced.
