Repairing split battery terminal ?

I wanted one that wasn't going to split again Jim, that thing is really heavy duty! It's not as shiny as it looks actually, the flash must have done that.

Quickly installed photoshop, found a suitable image of the new terminal, removed the back ground, pasted it over the old terminal, stretched it a bit, then deleted the part that would be behind the old terminal.

Except it doesn't address the reasonable possibility of the crimp being resistive due to age and stress. Better off going from cable to a new terminal.

so much so the flash has blurred the image so i cant quite make out what the terminal looks like

the reason the original lead terminals split is through over tightening them over the years,
when the lead terminals are tight on the battery post there should still be a gap,

but im sure most on here will already know this

The BoL says 320Nm plus 3/4 of a turn. That must be what's doing it.

Nope, don't know where you got that idea.

Simon, you know they (terminals and clamps) are conically tapered and differ between P&N, right?

Yes. That's why I usually loosen the nut a few turns and spread the clamp slightly with a screw driver to let it slide further down the taper to avoid the clamp closing right up due to sitting too high on the taper.

Unfortunately this one seems to be worn too far (or the posts on the fitted battery are not a good match for the clamps) as the clamps do close right up.

As a matter of immediacy I would replace the positive at the same time.

It looks fine but I'll get a clamp for that one as well.

I should have said in my original post though that its not an emergency "It broke and the car doesn't work any more" situation. I've already squeezed the clamp back into shape and put it back on and its holding satisfactorily for the mean time, so I'm not looking to do a bodge, I'm looking for the best way of doing a tidy permanent repair.

I did this on what is now Mungkie's Activa:



New battery clamp with extra screwy bits was about £7 from Halfords. I cut the old clamp off with a dremel, as you can see (it's on the airbox) but you could use a hacksaw then fixed the clamp on and put it all in place. I imagine it's still on the car perfectly secure.

Thanks Mike, that looks like what I want - so you inserted 20mm or so of bared back wire into the clamp and tightened it up ? Is it just the two visible bolts that are clamping the cable into the terminal, and do they clamp well enough to make a solid low resistance connection ?

I'm pretty sure that's exactly how it was Simon. I'll root out a better picture. If I remember properly, the part where the bare wire fitted in was "gripped" and a very tight fit. I certainly couldn't yank it out when I tried before I put it back on the battery.
