Fellas,
I would appreciate details of your social activities kept between yourselves, not on my posting which is intended to provide some useful information about diesel tuning.
Thank you. John.

I think that it's probably in the forum rules that all threads are expected to go off topic at least once...

Hi,

I've used a couple of tuning boxes on previous cars to great effect. The only issue that concerned me was the fact that a few insurance companies would not insure me with one fitted and that included the company that I was with. The problem is that after an accident it would be a reason that the insurance companies would wriggle out of a claim.
Make sure your covered if you have a tuning box!

Regards,

Howie

Update from long trip : nice and smooth between the gears and a lot more oomph under acceleration - 70mph on the flat in 5th gear at 2300 revs (this was 70mph in 5th gear at 2500 revs before the tuning box). Fuel economy does not seem to have suffered. I am very happy with the results so far and thinking of buying another for my Peugeot 406 instead of swapping. Now, if only I could get rid of the occasional clutch slip which started last year and reminded me yesterday that it had not gone away (could this be the start of a new topic perhaps?).

All the best,
John.

Would the extra power eventually have an effect on the clutch?

Can't be - that requires a change to the gearbox internals! More power certainly, but no change in RPM.

Mine is on 179K so about on course - extra oomph with tuning box confirmed so no need to go over 3000rpm any more and with luck the C5 will reach my goal of 200K before termination.

Yes I have heard similar stories - the engine is brilliant (that's why I bought my Peugeot 406 when the C5 was laid up). It all comes down to £££'s in the end - I've already rebuilt the rear suspension and brakes last year, had the aircon repaired (new rad), so another £500 or so for a new clutch may be a bridge too far. In addition to clutch slippage there's also the niggles of a rear end which bobs up and down when the engine is switched off, headlights that come on by themselves, a non-opening cargo window, weak cargo door struts - the list goes on and has to end sometime!! Meanwhile I shall try to keep it going but if I should find a 2001 - 2004 MK1 C5 HDI 110 estate with low mileage I would grab it now for sure and change.

In a bold word "Appears NOT".. I bought my Xantia on 156k... got a box on it from 200k, the clutch slipped for a day then stopped.. this was at 210k.. then it did it again for about 3 days at 220k.. then stopped. Even with a trailer on with a car on it last time it didn't slip. Granted its not strong, and the bite with high revs will slip it, but boot down in gear and its doesn't slip @ 249k ... It appears this is original clutch to me, theres no evedance of a swap, but then again I cant proove its a second clutch either.

So, id say , no it doesn;t have a big effect on the clutch. Its down to how the clutch is abused that causes premature wear.

I agree about the "abuse" of the clutch, but surely more power has to cause more load, it's a simply a matter of mechanics.

Same weight clutch, same weight car more torque available = ?

Incidentally, you try telling those with slipping clutches that it's down to the way they drive. . They are usually "perfect" drivers so there just HAS to be another reason! 8-[
