Finally got it all sorted, thanks to everyone for advice and suggestions.

After some heat and violence I finally managed to get the pin moving back and forward fairly freely, but I just couldn't find anything that would knock it through. Eventually I lost my temper and set about it with a large chisel, and succeeded in breaking the pin at either side of the pushrod.

The sphere was rather easier. One of the spectators (I seemed to have acquired quite a large audience) produced two large sets of Stilsons from his van. A litre of $$$ fluid added to the reservoir saw normal service resumed.

self-destructing spheres
900 max on the rear axle
The self-destruction is supposed to prevent the sphere from exploding when overloaded. :shock:
