Good call on the fuel pressure regulator, very good call indeed :)

Hi Dean

The exhaust system is new front to back including the catalyst, it also had a rebuilt head a few years ago when the cambelt tensioner gave way and bent 4 valves (a compression test proved it), however the emissions problem was there before and after the head came off.

I could remove the inlet pipe to the airfilter and give it a while I guess? the air filter is new.

If you ring its neck it will get to the revlimiter but its no ball of fire but then again its just a 1.8 8v.

Robert's sending me a spare throttle body which I will fit, and see how we get on.

The fuel pressure regulator is the the round shiny thing with weber written on (sorry for my limited knowledge), thats one thing I have changed, where can I get one?

Cheers!

I dont want to be horrible or anything but isnt it time this thing got scraped? fair enough if you like the challenge of putting it right but do you? want a nice 1.8 that works with full history let me know  .

What happened with this loom mod then? did it work in the end, make any difference at all?

Hi Dean

I see you point, but my late father (who I will happily admit I loved very much) had this car from new, which I drove with less than 40 miles on the clock and was our family car for 3 years with him and myself driving it all the time as it was a company car for the outfit we both worked at. It got sold not long before he died, I always regretted not buying it then (it was replaced with a god awful Nissan as the boss insisted we have japanese cars) so when in 2005 my cousin/his nephew (who also had very fond memories of M'HRY as it was known) came accross it again looking very downtrodden and filthy and up for sale I jumped at the chance. It turned out the vendor (my cousines now step-father in law) was geting rid as it was very heavy on fuel.......that was 6 years , £1500 and 1200 (yes 1200) miles ago!!

And that is the best reason of all for preserving and sorting out this car... Any of us that's seen it knows that fundamentally it is one very, very tidy Xantia and very much worth all the effort to finally resolve this problem...

Tim, your stash of goodies may even include a fuel pressure regulator and injector rail. I can't remember for sure, but will let you know.

You know i just tried looking on GSF for a fpr and i couldnt find one, in fact i cant find sod all on that website, its the most clunky badly thought out crap ive ever had the misfortune to use, it just doesnt make any sense, its got a lambda sensor under almost every catagory for the R6a XM, the site is just utter pants.

Anyway, if robert has a regulator stick that on there with the rail and injectors and give it a wirl, try not to drive it to much in the meantime though as you could foul up the new cat as well.

All yours for the price of post Tim. I have been tempted to throw these bits out many times now. They just missed the last Skip (stripped Xantia)!

I hope that something from this pile cures your Xantia. Its a nice car, and the 18.8v isn't a bad car to drive. Plenty of room in the engine bay.

If you don't have any luck getting this car sorted Tim drop down to my place at some point and I'll go through it from start to finish, it's the sort of problem that needs time spent to get to the bottom of it, much like my DS when I got that and wasn't happy with the way it ran I started at A and having got to Z without sorting it I used a different approach and discovered a rather obscure built in fault that it appears several well known and respected DS specialists didn't know about until I told them, time and patience will get it sorted I'm sure.

Do you have access to a trailer? I would offer to pop up to you but I feel that this car needs to have time spent on it maybe over several days plus whenever I do a job anywhere but home there's always a tool or obscure part I forget to take with me  I can't do anything for a few more weeks due to recovering from back surgery but I think by the end of the month I should be back in reasonable circulation.
