Me, sell a dodgy motor :o My name's not Arfur Daly you know

Anyway, I'm doing Chris a special cut-price gearbox rebuild. I shall offer at least 10% off my normal price

Ahh well, I'll have to do something I suppose :-k

How about 15% off the gearbox overhaul Chris?

One thing, on a more serious note, don't try to remove the gearbox from the engine until you've removed the TDC sensor. This is functionally inaccessible in-situ but if you don't remove it, you'll break it...

Some pictures from today's engine lifting adventures...

I shall let Chris tell the story. being an XM, there's a big one to tell but all I can say that in general it's an easier V6 to remove than the same engine is in a Xantia :-D

Thank you so so so so much for your help Jim, hopefully the hard part is now over...

I can't say how glad I am that the engine is out words won't cover it... At least I didn't poison you this morning :)

Now the fun part of getting the box off the engine, TDC sensor is off need to get the other driveshaft out, that looks like its going to be a barrel of laughs... 8-[

I suppose I should have stopped after we got the engine out but well, it was sunny and I could see the rust, and oh god can you see it..

Image

so time to set up

Image

more rust..

Image

a much better look i hope you'll agree...........

Image

My plan is to go over the entire under-bonnet area and remove all signs of rust, I didn't get a pic of the subframe legs but yeah, they will be taking up a fair bit of my time. I do wonder if when making the XM Citroen decided to treat it like a port joint and rub salt into before you start, it really is amazing the difference between the underside of this and my HDi which are the same year.

Unfortunately the subframe is too big as I was going to get them both dipped and then powder-coated to stop the tin worm :(

So far the intention is to get the car road worthy again by April so I can have it for the summer before she hibernates again as bad weather sets in.

The gearbox should hopefully be at the re-conditioners later on this week and the engine itself should be on the stand as soon as the bolts arrive so that will be made to look nice and pretty once more....

Lucky I have this week off really I suppose

Looks like good progress!
Seems that someone used to work at somerfield.....
I used my old ones as work tops too!

All xms appear to rust on that front crossmember.
Also worth checking the bumper support as they go too.

Well spotted sir! yes I did used to work there, and my theory is why get my clothes dirty when I can abuse that instead 8-)

As it happens I spotted that when removing the nose cone so i'll be doing the same treatment on that.

I've just made up an excel spreadsheet with a list of parts and pricings from various outlets and to say it mounts up quickly is an understatement!

I reckon on parts alone i'm tipping the £1k mark but that said this is no small project and considering that this will include an autobox rebuild, full engine service, new brakes and refurbed strut tops I guess the parts prices arent tooo bad.

I'm clinging to the fact that this should be one sweet XM when done.

I blasted a near-identical subframe (605) - cost me $100.

Sort of hoping you do change your mind and whip out this one, as I'd be curious to compare body mount locations.

Good progress made there Chris.

To be honest, £1k isn't a lot, when sorted I can imagine she would be worth a comfortable amount more than than if you did sell, which I can't see happening realistically  Even if thats not the case, we all still spend much more on our cars than they are worth on the market. I should add up the amount that RUNN has cost me in the 4 years I've had her, I imagine thats a good £1k and thats on a Xantia who's only magical and special to a few people on this planet. A V6 XM on the other hand is going to have a good few more people with interest.

Just think of the amount of trouble that the project is keeping you out of

Thing is Kev, that's only £250 a year, which is probably still less than the equivalent monthly payment on a new car.
