The display on mine shows 42.8mpg. Big mixture of driving shared between motorways and er indoors short shopping trips. Then again when I drive it I hardly ever brake ( yes I do need to plan ahead a bit) and chug along 65ish max.
I'm trusting the display figures here, but that's another argument.....

To agree with others,the OPs fuel figures are about the norm i'd suggest.
Recently sold my 04 2.2 auto exclusive as was costing a fortune to fill up all the time...got so bad that i even had the injectors reconned thinking it just had to be the reason but even that didnt help.Real shame,fantastic car otherwise.I'd have to agree that the main problem is the auto gearbox though,used to always find myself manually changing into third as it just used to love holding on to second.
