The only thing with that welder Ally is that it needs a 15A permanent connection to the mains, whereas the 135 runs off a normal 13A plug - which makes it much more flexible! Unless you're going to be welding really heavy stuff, then the 135 will be more than adequate. These Clarke machines usually get good reviews, and I can make pretty decent welds with mine, even though I am pretty amateur

The other thing you will need is a welding mask - the hand held ones supplied with the machines are hopeless - in theory you can MIG one handed whilst holding the mask with the other, but it is much much easier to have the mask on your head and weld with both hands! If you can run to it, a self dimming mask is even better still - saves all that nodding-of-the-head-and-losing-the-place-with-the-torch malarky

I'm going to buy one sometime

The nodding of the head is especially fun when you're upside down under the car

If you fancy a trip out to Lanark, I could give you some pointers on the welding - it's much easier if some one shows you how and sets the machine up first time! Would have to be after 21st June when I am back from down South though... You could practice on the Visa

I'll be taking out everything above what's being welded I think. I've already had the interior stripped down to the bare metal after spilling 20L of waste oil.....I know it inside out, literally

You don't have to buy one, you could hire instead. Much cheaper option if you've got everything prepped and ready to go. From memory, you have a flat rental + whatever consumables you use ( gas etc. ). I think it cost me £20 per day but this was many years ago.
I've only Mig welded a couple of times and the end product was awful to look at but was solid enough to get me through a couple of MOT's, so all-in-all I was happy enough.

You're right Gammy, but I'd like to take my time and practise a bit fist. I don't mind spending a bit of cash on something that I'm likely to have for a number of years anyway. I'd like to build a BBQ as well, before the summer's gone

I had a look on servicebox this evening:

Parts 15 and 8 are in particuarly bad shape, and part 20 isn't too great but hasn't rusted through yet. You can buy them new but they cost a fortune. Are these parts structural and likely to cause an MOT failure?

your picy was not showing up as i sent my last post, so how is it above my last post,

VOSA (MOT) state any rust within 30cm (12") in all directions from seat/belt, suspensionis and steering mounttins are a fail, or if not rustted through an advisory,

out side of these area's it realy depends on how fare you wish to go, or even how uninitiated you are TEA HE, theres nout like jumppung in at the deep end

im sure you can look up details on VOSA's web site,

I suspect it might be ok then, I think those 2 bits are far enough away from the seat belt mountings.

I can have the car off the road for a while, it just costs me money driving the other one!

and that is cheatting useing that oil drum sorry BBQas a test bed, what you should practise on is a dersh,

nout like diveing in at the deap end
