I dont think its the matrix, I think it could possibly be the blower motor circuit board that was over heating. Take the blower out and have a look, its not a hard job, just under the passenger side od the dash,

I hate reading threads with no conclusion so here's mine. The "smoke", despite having a weeping matrix, was actually fine particles of white corrosion (aluminium?) either coming from the heater matrix or, more likely, the A/C evaporator.

I'll be able to know for sure if you're right. Because the A/C has been disabled for 8 years, I suspect the evaporator but seeing Jim's pics of a matrix he removed, you could be in for the win xac.
