So what is the steel wrench type thing stuck in the bonnet towards the window on V6 mk1 ? I haven`t had time to pull out for a look as been doing other stuff.

Jim, I'm positive your V6 has the indexed mirror.
I clearly remember it moving when you took me for a spin in it.

If it's in the passenger side corner and the back, that'll most likely be the towing eye. Some were located there and other times they were packed in with the jack in the spare wheel...lexi wrote:So what is the steel wrench type thing stuck in the bonnet towards the window on V6 mk1 ? Bruce H parted out a non-dipping, single airbag Exclusive (Series II). So, they do exist!
I joked it was "exclusive" of the features one came to expect.
Has anyone experimented to see if the motor unit can be transplanted between dipping and non-dipping mirror shells? I mean the inner bit which is about size/shape of a boot polish tin.

Dipping mirror is a great idea, the VSX Xm has that, very handy that you can adjust it when in reverse. I often adjust it for parking next to curbs.

Yes, I have converted a non-dipping to dipping to reinstate the dipability on my Mk2 Xantia. The wiring needs to be swapped over, which is a bit tricky.addo wrote: Has anyone experimented to see if the motor unit can be transplanted between dipping and non-dipping mirror shells? Mk1 and Mk2 dipping mirrors have different means of connection to the boot polish tin, the Mk1 being soldered (you can only get to one side of the PCB), and the Mk2 having a convenient multi-way connector (which is not compatible with a Mk2 non-dipping mirror).
The boot polish tin is interchangable with one from a Jaguar XJ40 (soldered connections like the Mk1), but you need to cut a couple of tracks on the PCB, as they have different wire links fitted (and as above, you can only get to one side).

C'est interessant. My non-dipping X2 mirror (now replaced with Bruce H's non-dipping Exclusive one) has a three pin socket on the "boot polish tin"; are you saying the dipper has a different plug again?
One (non-mirror Q) that confounded me: I found yet another redundant plug in the harness. It's on the driver's side of the front footwells, strapped with foam tape to the main cross-car harness. Two pin plug, with largeish terminals, reddy-brown in colour. I wondered if manual cars have any switches on the clutch pedal.

Yes, it has an 8 way connector (standard 2x4 0.1" square pin format). Plus 2 for the heated mirror, plus 2 for the temperature sensor, makes 12 wires all together (the Mk1 only has 10 because the temperature sensor is on the other side).addo wrote:C'est interessant. Isn't that the diagnostic plug?addo wrote:C'est interessant. My non-dipping X2 mirror (now replaced with Bruce H's non-dipping Exclusive one) has a three pin socket on the "boot polish tin"; are you saying the dipper has a different plug again?

Not hidden I doubt it.. it will be for something thats obviously not fitted to your car but the car used a "Standard" harness..It could be a plug for electric seats, or even the headted elements..
Actually, it could even be the connector from the brake switch for the CRUISE CONTROL knock off when the brake pedal has the cruise switch fitted..
just a guess..
