Hi All
That looks identical to the one fitted to the XM roof light. Would need to see the plug on the end of the wires to be sure. If so I guess it is likely that the same item was also fitted to a fair number of PUG vehicles as well.
Regular whining noise problem on XM's as well but at least it is easy to get to. It can also choke up with fluff around the thermistor so that the climate control does not work very well.

Sorry I wasn't clear. The LED sits in the vent. Immediately behind that is the thermistor on a strip of board. At the other end of the board is the round plastic housing you see above. At the far end of that lies the fan. I'm surprised you got the vent off leaving the plastic housing behind as it's all one assembly but glad it's stopped the distracting noise!

Cars without alarm LED don’t have a removable cover.
Prising out the fan is easier after prising out the clock from the bottom.
On my car, there’s no plug for the fan; the wires disappear into a loom.
I’ve squirted blue window cleaner into the fan grill to quieten it.
Did that when it was stopped, and then switched it on, and squirted again.
When switching to accessories, the fan should start clockwise for a couple of turns, then stop, and restart to spin anti-clockwise until the key is back to the ‘off’ position.

The cover is meant to be glued originally, but i unglued it when it last started making noise. The LED wasnt contributing to the noise, it just happened to slip back the last time i fiddled with the fan to stop it annoying me. Just one of those little things you live and put up with.

Re: Clicking/whirring
It should come out through the hole in the dash with the grille still attached. It can be tricky to undo the connectors through the clock apperture, but it is possible. These instructions are only applicable to a mk1 Xantia.
