thanks Uncle, yep definately wet liners, luckily all in place, with head off..

is there a trick for clamping them? I almost remember something...

To clamp them I just used a length of wood with a hole drilled through each end....I placed this diagonally over the liners then used a head bolt with a nut on it....I screwed the head bolt into the block then lowered the nut to clamp the wood down.

Unfortunately I forgot to refit the wood & turned the engine which lifted 2 of the liners

so I ended up replacing the seals on all 4 liners...the seals were £5 odd each which is a total rip off when you see what they are.

If you have read my thread you will see that I never touched the head....I checked it for flatness & it was fine & that was good enough for me...I don't believe in having components machined for the sake of it if they are ok.

Make sure to clean the head bolt holes out thoroughly...if you haven't got a tap the correct size grind a couple of flutes down the threads of an old head bolt & use that. If you can use compressed air to blow out the holes, & apply a smear of grease to each head bolt before refitting the head.

Unfortunately I was less than judicious when I removed the head bolts. ( I did not have the correct star drive bit, but managed to loosen most of the bolts but not two, with a normal socket). So I went for a skim anyway. It's back today, new valves going in tonight or tomorrow.

I now have the correct bit.

ok all back together...

175psi across the board... runs nicely

but

two things..

the temp gauge is on full, (warning light and STOP on)
the engine isn't hot at all so, a faulty sender or a break in one of the 2 wires, guessing a break as it was all fine before head removal and wires can get kinked etc..

(can I measure resistance of sender and see it drop as engine warms up?)

Some small bubbles in rad filler neck... I would expect large ones as air locks are removed, but seems a stream of little ones..

Will keep an eye on coolant and oil, and car needs a decent drive to get coolant system sorted anyway, after fixing gauge problem...

nothing untoward happens when you rev engine, to the coolant in the Rad...

Excellent work John

I adore those little TU engines..

The temperature gauge sender is a shockingly delicate little flower and loves to fall to bits when you touch it.

Indeed you can measure its resistance as the engine warms up, any old meter will do

For the life of me I cannot recall id they go higher as they get hotter or lower

TU engines, in my limited experience, are little bleeders to bleed so a few small bubbles initially does not surprise me. To get all the little air pockets fully dislodged and bled out takes some time and agitation just as it does on an XUD. I always find you think you have all the air out and then a day later, the collonat has dropped a tad, showing a bit more air has come out.

I'm slow an full of errors. I do use a spillchucker on most boards but this is Opera and hasn't got one, neither has Safari, which explains the illegibility of my posts. Some of it anyway, the rest is down to sheer dumnity©. Conrods, indeed
