I don't know if anybody any longer reads this thread or drives these cars, but I have two of them. Just working on the cam belt on a french import where the previous owner claimed it has been done few thousand km's ago. Well, perhaps the belt but not the tensioner and the other roller.
The tensioner can be replaced fine, without problems, without taking out the engine mount if you just release the mounting BELOW the engine so that it can be jacked up bit higher. When you get the tensioner bolt above the steel beam on the car body, everything is fine. Took me about one hour to replace the tensioner even if I had to repair the eccentric tensioner release part by welding and grinding. Someone had destroyed the hexagonal part previously and had to fix that.

Come on Jim there'll be some guy with his 2.1TD in bits waiting for the reassembly guide.... my HDi cylinder head shouldn't take this long
....
