Powerful heavy petrol cars always have consumed gallons of fuel unless driven with very considerable care and restraint - which rather defeats the purpose of having them!

This is why I drive a diesel - and with only 88 BHP available in my BX TD my driving is inevietably rather more restrained than it would be in a 150 BHP CT engined Xantia.

My Activa does 28-30 mpg all the time, true I'm not the worlds fastest driver, but the crucial part seems to be cruising speed.
Trip to France two weeks ago: Oxford to Portsmouth avg 75mph=1/4 tank
Le Harve to Alencon avg 85mph=3/4 tank
The distances are roughly the same. Maybe a touch more on the French side.

The cruise speed does have a big effect. I got back from a small trip over the last few days. I did Stoke on trent (Staffordshire) to Dover, and then driving bits round there, then from Dover to London, then London back to Stoke on Trent. I almost did the whole journey on 1 tank. Got 538 miles out of the first tank (reserve tank light came on at 501 miles). That was mainly cruising at the 60-70 zone (80 for odd parts). The fuel gauge did not really move keeping at 60. Moves a HELL of a lot faster at 80.
