Diesels are great for taxis but give me a petrol engine any time, the bigger the better.
When F1 goes diesel then I might reconsider

Compare like with like, normally aspirated petrol with normally aspirated diesel, turbo petrol and turbo diesel. If fuel economy isn't an issue, turbo petrol is the way to go, since most of us have to pay for our own fuel, a big turbo petrol just isn't an option.
Saab and Volvo were doing turbo petrol engines with impressive low down torque, the Saab 2.3 Turbos put out as much torque as any 4 cylinder diesel and they did it 15 years ago.

Not to mention the 2.5 litre 4 cylinder CX turbos of the 80's which by all accounts have wonderful low down and midrange torque...Kowalski wrote:Compare like with like, normally aspirated petrol with normally aspirated diesel, turbo petrol and turbo diesel. Source Glass technical Service data - so reliable that it describes BX DTR Turbo as having vacuum servo brakes!
That data is completely wrong
The series 1 CX turbo (no intercooler) is 168bhp, and 217 lb ft. I don't recall at what revs the peak torque occurs at but I think it was around 2500, but with something like 90% of it still available at 2000. I'm sure Shane will chip in with the actual figures
Depending on who you believe, the later intercooler models are reputed to have quite a bit more power too.

Quote from Shell, who supplied the following news item concerning the 12-hour Sebring race at:
http://www.shell.com/home/Framework?sit ... _race.html
Notice the following line . . .
"In addition to its outstanding pace, the car was also noted by the sun-kissed Sebring crowd for its unusual engine note. As the other cars deafened spectators lap after lap, the Audi R10 TDI, while among the fastest, was noticeably quieter than the competition thanks to its diesel engine."

So tell me truthfully that you prefer the sound of a 1.9TD Xantia over a V6, or that a bus sounds better than a Dodge Viper

I did that recently (it was really early everyone in bed etc) with the bonnet up because I was topping up the washer bottle..... I thought there was something wrong with it and rushed to switch off.... only realising when I was inside the car that it was it's 'normal' sound...jeremy wrote:Nothing beats the wonderful chorus of a cold XUD engine outside your bedroom window at 5am.
