Hang on a mo before you going getting all excited about engine ECUs! Is this a VSX spec car by any chance? I reckon that ECU is the suspension one. The switch on the top of the pump is, I think, a wide open throttle sensor for the A/C which cuts the compressor when you ask for full beans. The easy way to check if it's ECU controlled is to look at the cold start avance - if it's cable operated from thermostat housing to the back of the pump then it's non ECU. If it's vacuum controlled, then it's ECU. I doubt a 96 is ECU, as my 97 isn't - but then Citroen do lots of things to prove us wrong!
If this is a VSX car with climate control, I might be interested in a couple of bits if you're breaking it

I re-read the original post, and it says it's an LX, so no hydractive, and a better study of the picture defo shows a cable harness coming off the engine, over the pump to next to coolant bottle - so it does look like an ECU jobbie.
Mine is 97R, but it's a right parts bin effort - it seems to have been registered by Citroen as a run out model - and is mechanically controlled. Perhaps I'll check the RP no and see when it was built.
So, ignore most of my post above
Comment still stands about bits off busbuddy's car though - if it's got climate control!

He actually used the older 1.7TD version out of a BX though.
