Does anyone know if a 2.2l ph2 c5 estate 2005 is likely to be wearing a 4HP20 gearbox and how can I be certain that it is before buying it? I've come to realise that as Jim pointed out earlier in this topic an auto is probably the best way to go. I've got a shortlist to look at now all 2.2s there is no point worrying about the cost of running it if the mpg drops only slightly
Thanks again everyone. Regards Nigel.

So I'm looking for a four speed not a six soory mate I'm finding this confusing to say the least. Most of what I've been looking at in 2.2 138bhp or 136 bhp diesels have been 6 speed auto boxes I think.

Thanks again for that it does help you know. So the 2.2 vtr I've been looking at is 136 bhp does it have a chance of having a serviceable auto box?

Its the harder autobox to look at.. it has the fluid filter buried deep inside the box so an unknown history and bad fluid would mean a strip down to have it changed though.. if it performs perfectly then it shouldnt be a worry.. the trouble with many is they are claimed a sealed for life box so if its never had a fluid service which they wont woth that claim 100k plus if all original is verging on borrowed time..
However if a box is good then the best thing to do is perform a three stage fluid service where three oil services 500 miles apart each should be done to ensure a full oil service is done.
In short to your answer .. no. But all boxs need a lexia to reset the oil wear counter after a change. They are equal to service but the zf box filter is inside the box and not behind a removable cover..

OK thanks there is a 3 month warrenty on this car so I will take the opportunity to ask Pleiades to do three fluid changes 500 miles apart during the warrenty period. Besides getting the brakes sorted all round And flushing the lhm to. Thanks again for your advice. I'm gonna take the plunge I think my poor ole xantia is almost knackered poor girl. She's 18 going on 19 just. she has done extremely well for an everyday car. mind you she has had this year alone, New clutch, new clutch cable, new drivers side drive shaft and intermediate bearing, new alternator and serpentine belt. new cv boots on passenger shaft to. and a replacement gearbox after the old one died on me. if the body was better and she wasn't burning oil I'd be clinging on a bit longer to her.

The C5 uses LDS, not LHM. LDS is orange in colour.

Nigel, I suggest you have a look here at Julian Marsh's site - it has a lot of information about the majority of Citroen cars, the specs, engines and technology. It might help familiarise yourself with the newer technology.
This is for the C5: http://www.citroenet.org.uk/passenger-c ... index.html
Please note, I'm no longer active on the Forum, so won't respond to messages.
The C5 Mk1 uses LDS for the steering and the suspension, and (but PLEASE check this!) DOT4 for the brakes.
