Following that test I'll stick with my hypothesis from our visit!! :-D
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

Yes Mick, you and Jim are still in the running but who will win :-D

Just been reading through the BoL Haynes manual at the job, it’s very disjointed working through the job with the HDi supplementary chapters

It mentions driveshaft removal and gearbox draining 8-[ for exhaust manifold / turbo removal but I won’t know if that’s true until I can get underneath ….unless something is more apparent before I get that far….

The compression test certainly appears to indicate a problem on No.4 as we thought from our visit and subsequent discussions.

I've not got the Haynes with the supplementary HDi information and sadly have no experience of HDi head removal. It's a case of seeing if you can remove the manifolds. Some studs may be quite hard to get to... The 1.9TD could be 'fun' in this respect with one almost impossible on first sight.

It may be necessary to pull the engine forward (disconnect all top mount points and support from underneath) to get adequate access to the manifold - as is the case with the Activa 2.0TCT...

And again, it may be easier overall to hire an engine crane and have the whole thing out, sit it in your garage and work on it in comfort.

No worries Jim

It will be a slow job as and when I get the weather, no room in the garage for an engine so it will be done in situ.

Strip off - assess - and then if viable parts and reassemble.

Worth getting a 406 manual? - the 110 HDi is covered in there without the Supplementary Appendix nonsense (make sure you get the right 406 manual as the earlier red one doesn't cover the HDI, green one does)

£4.50 delivered.

Not had the head off a DW10 but can confirm the 30° canted back XUD9TE (in a 306) has some access challenges.

I'd tidy the garage and go with Jim's suggestion (get it out and in the dry!) much more pleasant this time of year! :)

This was wet March and pretty grim:

A few years later, playing with the other end, despite it being August, engine came out, onto a trolley and into the garage. Quite a few weekends that followed were very wet but didn't slow me down.

Oh yes the weather and when things happen to a car they will mainly when its rubbish weather , my rear shocks went on this little thing and had to be done... with a nice cushion of snow and a little ice. Was worth the struggle as it was my daily a while back , the difference was amazing it drove great after.

Definitely consider working indoors, but before you strip anything too far down have you checked valve clearances? Even if the HDi is hydraulic lifters, of which I'm unsure, this could point you in the right direction. (seems strange for just one cylinder to go "down" after a timing skip event, normally would be all 4 similarly affected).

My thoughts are maybe a burned valve/damaged lifter co-incidental with the core plug. (Also have you managed to ascertain where the compression is being lost yet? As suggested, a spare tyre would likely provide enough volume to confirm intake/exhaust/rings/cooling system).

Given Jim's noticing of "blow back" through the normally super-sucky intake I'd be inclined to suspect an intake side problem but some kind of redneck leakdown test would give better direction.
