That's a lot of miles for a 65 plate car Nigel! High mileage on one so young is no worry though...

I agree on blowing all that money on a car, any car, is just too much and especially one that's an unknown quantity...

A wise decision in my view :D

No idea on the coppery deposits at all...

Hope it all works out...

Thanks Jim. I appreciate that more than you know. I have studied autotrader today and picked out several c5's that are almost or just over a thousand quid.starting at around 850. So I shall be chasing them in the next few days. I think the coppery dry powder over that engine might be evidence of a high pressure coolant leak somewhere. Warrenty or no warrenty no one needs the hassle. I am limiting my focus to a 110 hdi. And that's it
In either sx or exclusive spec. Preferably with lots of history I'm aiming at around the 2003 to 2004 era .

Get yourself a 406Hdi super car for peanuts and relatively easy to repair.

That's what I replaced my C5 with.

if you are going for an older C5 Nigel, the facelift model came in mid to late 2004 and in my opinion are much improved over the previous model. They will be badged VTX, VTX+ and Exclusive IIRC. Good hunting.

I would like to explore automatics a little more. Preferably diesels. I understand the need for a more powerful engine although some two litre 2004-5 c 5 cars with auto boxes have 138 bhp. I am concerned about possibly buying an auto and doing the wrong thing. Some Citroen autos seem good value for money at around a grand but mileage is incredibly high on them. A 2005 c5 with 166k on it worries me that perhaps the auto box could be near the end of it's life. Do I pay more for a lower milage box or take a chance at s high milage auto. Ejat is high milage gor an auto box. Or do i only look for autos with warrenty on them? Is two litres at 138 bhp enough power to have power and better fuel consumption. The 2.2 litre diesels seem to estimate higher fuel consumption at around 45 mpg. I'm used to getting 55+ on the xantia. Sorry to muck you all about. I find this very daunting it is probably the first time in my life I have had to take this task on alone my Dad was always on hand to help in the past. These days he relies on me to help him with his heart condition and my mum has dementia to. Its kind of tough being an only child especially when other stress presents itself along the way it doesn't take much to tip the balence the wrong wayway. I will make a decision I promise soon.

I ran a 2.0 8v HDi Auto 110.. dont dismiss it.. it went far better then i anticipated and averaged 48mpg.. id also go for the AL4Cand not the hp20 zf box too.. firstly in the al4 the filter is behind the drain plate so you dont need to remove and split the box secondly the valve block is on the front behind a cover so a second whammy for repairs. The al4s can suffer from dud lockup clutch electro valve failiures.. these are in the valve block on the front.. so no box out job..

No gearbox is good.. they ALL need fluid changes sealed for life rubbish or not. Keep on top of the fluid changes and they will give good service. An al4 and zfhp20 both use esso lt fluid and not a dex 2 or 3 fluid.. i like the al4.. and i loved the hdi/auto combo and not rule out 110bhp.. its better then you think.
The phase 2 c5 with 2.0 hdi 16v auto is a different more complex more expensive Aisin 6 speed box. Again not sealed for life and DO need regular changes... i dont know about these yet..

Thanks for that. Any idea which year they stopped producing the 8 valve 110 auto?

Following your thought processes with interest here Nigel. I'm sure you'll get there soon.

ok it seems that even after extensive searching a 110 Auto is simply not available
which means I need to move my attentions to the next model.
I have found a 2.2 HDi 16 valve 2005 estate which seems to have low enough insurance
and a bit of warranty chucked in for good measure, mileage is 110K
any thoughts please the front does have the later insignia oh and it is a VTR model.
as always your comments are appreciated.
regards.
Nigel.

That coppery stuff could be copper ease spray that has been used. Good stuff used on battery terminals and the backs of brake pads to stop the squeaks.

Here's a PSA video you may find informative on the DPF system

Ooooo that is scarey music on that video .
