Is it the foot or the toucan that we are meant to be looking at Steve?

It's a boot from a garden gnome I thing, with something stuffed in to look like a leg.

Anyone want to take responsibility, and avoid a blank day before I do the deed myself...NewcastleFalcon wrote: 27 Jun 2023, 08:46 Just a stimulus to remind all FCF'ers of our communal responsibility to retain the credibility of the Picture (s) of the Day thread aka POTD. Key word is "day". Any "blank" day without an entry on the thread is pure negligence.

Birch log, meet Magnolia Log Bit of heavy pruning at the weekend, took a chunky branch off as well as a decent haircut off the top (climbed the tree then long loper-on-a-very-long-pole crudely waved about as high as I could reach!)

Re: Picture(s) of the day....
The trouble with pruning Magnolias is that they tend to grow back twice as enthusiastically
They are truly lovely for the two weeks that they flower, and provide fantastic shade on hot days*, but for the rest of the time they just sit there growing ever larger
*- I set up my hammock under ours and it makes for a very pleasant place on hot days. I tend to lose functionality when it's hot so a hammock and shade works very well for me

Re: Picture(s) of the day....
Magnolia enthusiasm for growing post pruning: Absolutely!
Tried ignoring it last year (no pruning) but it's still put loads of height on!
The laurel hedge/tree/out of control monsters were worse though! I cut a meter , maybe 1.5m off them each year and was still barely making a dint on them. Trimmed back to just the trunks and dug them out.
Not ugly, but rather too vigorous!
The magnolia does make up for itself with the lovely white display several times a year - though almost invariably seems to get beaten to death by the wind about 3 days later! Likely no more displays from it this time given the haircut.
There's a great enormous yew tree close to it, not decided what to do with it. It's enormous, obliterates a lot of light, poisonous berries (and 18 month old who has had a go at eating, no joke, stones from the garden!) But equally is likely older than the (1929) house and just minding its own business.
