Citroen Xantia Key pad Malfunction

I have a friend that owns a Citroen Xantia 1.9TD 1996.
A problem has arrisen from the security keypad displaying a red and a green light. The manual states that there is a fault with the system.
We have disconnected the battery in an attempt to clear the fault - no luck removal of the ECU fuse - no change.
What can be done to resolve this - any help would be much appreciated.

Try punching in the code 0001 and see if it then goes to a green light and starts.
That is considered a default code.
There is a procedure to reprogramme the original PIN or whatever you choose after that.
If that don't work, we're both inda$#!+.
