you have to cut valve seats not just grind valves because after having head skimed valves are to close to head face and they will cotact pistons regards malcolm

I have never done anything other than just grind the valves in (mainly to get the pitting out of the exhaust valves) and it's always been just fine. By making sure you measure the piston protrusion from the block, and selecting the correct gasket, you avoid any problems with piston/valve overlap.
After all, the average skim only removes about 1-2 thou, which is hardly going to make the valves hit the pistons. The closest they come to contact is about 2mm (which is nearly 80 thou)

My latest spare TD lump has no compression either, it turned over like the injectors were out, I think its caused by driving them in a cloud of steam until they stop, havent pulled the top off yet but am expecting a bit of serious warpage in there.

Thanks for all the help here, got everything stripped down, gasket looks knackered but head looks OK got prices locally of £20 to pressure test and £25 to skim if all OK. Quite happy with that. Fingers crossed it is salvagable.

Partial success here. Got the head back on, and it started, eventually! However the radiator is leaking quicker than it goes in all burst down the side. Don't want to spend even more money, not even driven it yet, with a new one getting near to £80, GSF list several different ones, different prices. 0000000000 list one for a 1.9D with air con for £30. Will this fit my non-air con car?
