I just noticed that I have a screw missing, no really on my injector pump. there used to be a screw on the arm that the accelerator cable connects too, it pushed in to a sort of damper when the accelerator arm came to rest (i.e. when you took your foot of the accelerator). I don't know what this did or if it is connected to me only getting 32mpg.
if someone could put my mind too rest on this missing screw.

P.S. Bocsh pump.[:D]

If that screw is missing it won't make a lot of difference, the damper is there to make the engine smoother to drive, and to give it a bit more anti-stall.
When the fuel economy gets down to as bad as 32mpg something is seriously wrong with the car. Does it smell strongly of diesel? If so it has a fuel leak.

I would check the fuel return pipe going from the injector, if your only getting 32, for starters. This perishes and can cause a diesel leak, a common fault on Xantia's. When I got my first Xantia the car had this problem and was only returning about 30-35mpg. Replaced the pipe and now get 43+mpg.
If you have a leak you should see oily diesel patches where the car has been parked up.

Of course if the leakoff pipes fail the front of your engine will be soaked in diesel. If you have a bosch pump you will probably have a starting problem, roto diesel you won't.
Fuel must go some where - so if your consumption is poor the car must be smoking or leaking! Its possible for a vent pipe around the tank to leak.
Probably best to find somewhere clean to park the car, take it for a short run, park up, and move it afer about 10 mins and look for the spots on the ground. Leakoff pipes on our ZX left the front of the engine looking damp but not shiny wet but there was a large stain on the ground.
