I haven't made biodiesel, but I have used SVO (Straight vegetable Oil). (in a C15 (XUD7 engine)). I found that methanol was quite expensive in the UK, and that making biodiesel on a reasonable scale was something of a faff, whilst just modifying the engine to heat up veg oil was quite simple. It does depend on the type of driving you do - SVO only works if you normally do trips of at last 10 miles due to the warm-up and purge periods. And of course you can use SVO _and_ biodiesel if you like.
There is also the less-well-known Biopower group option which is biodiesel made by thinning/dilution rather than chemistry. Uses less energy and produces less waste but seems to work fine.
Very good info on BD is available on the journey-to-forever site. For veg-oil I would read the veg-oil list at lists.topica.com. There are several BD mailing-lists/forums where you should be able to find plenty of UK users - it's been a growing trend for at least 4 years now.
All of these fuels work fine in and XUD, but the current state in the HDi diesels is less well-tested. I haven;t been keeping up for the last year or so, so I'm not wuite sure what the current word on the street is.
