ZX D Driveshaft boot

Unread post by RichardW »

My Sister's got a ZX D that keeps throwing the drive shaft boot off the CV joint (N/S I think). The boot was replaced a couple of times, then the driveshaft, but just heard that it's just had an MOT, and the boot was off again. Can't comment on the quality or otherwise of the replacement shafts fitted, but anybody got any ideas why it should do this? It's only done about 70k miles and is otherwise in A1 condition (unlike our ZX TD [:o)]). AFAIK no evidence of it having been crashed, and no reports of untoward knocking or other noises that might indicate a failed engine mount or similar.

I have had the same problem, most replacement boots come with cable ties to attach them, these can work well but on my ZX they have a habit of slipping off, boots are really supposed to be attached using stuff called ligarex strapping, thin metal stuff, but the tool to apply this is not commonly available to DIY folks, keep trying with the ties, they need to be tight!

I've got Ligarex pliers, you can still get them from GSF for £22.00.
I've got a roll of ligarex strapping and the clips and its great stuff, I use it on all sorts of things.
Going back to the problem in hand, I find it odd that the replacement shaft also popped off its boot, assuming that the replacement shaft was a GKN or quality equivlant, the boots are securely fastened with metal strapping.
I have not heard of this problem before, and wonder if the car has ever suffered any accident damage which is causing the shaft to run slightly misaligned. Otherwise, if the front arm bushes were severely worn........but no I don't see it really.

I've had this problem with my ZX. I started off fitting a universal boot suitable for a ZX 1.9 D from a motor factors and it kept coming off. So I went to the main dealers to get exactly the right boot. However they couldn't match the original boot that I took off and the one they produced for the ZX 1.9D was obviously completely different. I noticed that the driveshaft that I had didn't match the one in the Haynes manual for the 1.9D so I bought the manual for the petrol ZX and found that my driveshaft looked the same as the one for the ZX 1124 and 1360 petrol models. Once I realised this it then just a case of getting the right boots from Andyspares and they fitted fine and didn't come off again.
It seems that some ZX 1.9D's were factory fitted with non-standard driveshafts. I don't know if the driveshafts are interchangeable with the 1.4 petrol ones but the boots I bought were exactly the same as the original ones I had on my 1.9D
It's possible that you also had one of these ZX D's with the non-standard driveshafts. If you fitted the boots for a standard 1.9D then they're not a good fit and will come off.
Another thing I've noticed is that I've got the front brakes off a 1.4 petrol model as well. These are made my Bendix I think. I noticed when I fitted the boots that there's not much clearance between the boot and the plate that fits under the two mounting bolts for the brake caliper. If the boot was too big then it would touch the metalwork of the brakes and come off. I suppose this could be your problem with the new driveshaft. I would check how much clearance you've got between the boot and the metalwork of the brakes. Go from lock to lock and try it with the car on the ground. If a rotating boot touched anything it would probably come off. I wonder if the driveshafts and brakes on the 1.4 petrol models are a matched pair. So if you've fitted the driveshaft for a 1.9D it may touch the Bendix brakes. It's just speculation but it's worth checking for.
The standard driveshafts for the ZX 1.9D are as shown in the Haynes manual but the ones on my car have a metal canister on the inner boot as well as the boot itself. Check the other side of you car to see if you originally had these canister type driveshafts.
Hope this helps.
