1997 P 406 Idle?

Hi, just picked up a very tidy 406 2.0 GLX and have noticed that the revs at idle speed fluctuate between 1100 and about 900 rpm, is this normal. The car has ABS A/C and rest of toys but even when the electrics and air con are off, the revs still jump around.
Any help would be fantastic

Hot, cold or both? How old

Does it both engine hot and cold, although when cold, the revs stay firmly around the 1100rpm mark, also, I didn`t mention, but when I rev the engine, the revs fall back down quite slowly - not sure if this is a feature of peugeot engines but my old Golf GTi revs used to fall instantly to to idle.
