306 whining at Speed

Hi all,
I have a 2000 V plate 306 hdi estate that is starting to make a whining noise at as I drive. Basically as I progresivly increase speed the whining noise gets faster and faster. I have depressed the clutch to see if it could be the engine, its not.
I'm thinking wheel bearing..?[:(]
I any Idea's ?

Well could be wheel bearing, or transmission. What happens if you knock it out of gear, or even turn of the engine whilst moving or both ?

I have taken the car out of gear whilst dribving to find that the noise is still there so I think that it must be either a bearing or some part of the drive train..... does the 306 suffer from this problem often ?
