Usually a rumbling noise, it will probably get worse as the bearings warm up (after about 5 miles or so),
If it gets really bad you might hear a clicking and feel a notchyness through the steering when your driving slowly, this means that the bearing has started to break up and you need to fix it straight away then!!
You can test for it by jacking the front of the car up and gripping the tyre on the top and bottom and trying to rock the wheel, if it moves even slightly its time to do the bearings, Its only about 40 mins work per bearing if you've done them before, 1-2 hours if its your first one maybe

I have had the front wheel bearing go on my current 106 and last 106 - on both occasions it just was whining noise, which got really loud over about 30mph. Gets really annoying - when you jack up the car and try the bearing for wear you can't really detect any so it took me a while the first time to figure out what was wrong - second time I knew straight away. On the other hand I had a rear bearing go on my wife's 306 - there was no noise whatsoever but you could easily feel the give when wiggling the jacked up wheel.
