Radio steering remotes

Can anyone tell me why it is that on my xantia when I use any of the radio remotes on the steering wheel all they do is turn down the radio volume. All buttons behave the same.[:(]

Its quite likely to be the 'rings' (I can't recall their correct name) behind the steering wheel which pass the info from the wheel to the steering column and into the radio harness.
