Peugeot 406 air con not working

I've got a yr2000 406hdi lx. Just noticed that when the air con button is pressed on climate control panel, A/C indicator comes on and you can hear a relay switching in the dash but the air con is not actually coming on. Had a quick look under bonnet, nothing that obvious to me. Anyone know of any quick and simple things to look for????

If it's got a gas leak & therefore low on gas, the air/con system will not trigger. Probably best to get things tested by an air/con mechanic particularly gas charge levels.
