Xantia Smoking on startup
I have a 95 1.9 td Xantia Estate vsx, when starting up in the morning or when it has been standing for a while. I get smoke from the back end, sometimes its a cloud others its just a puff of smoke. The car also runs lumpy until you get going when it runs fine with no problems. The smoke seems to get worse the less fuel there is in the tank. Filters etc have been changed, glow plugs have been changed and its not high mileage 90K. It runs as if its miss firing (sorry petrol speak) which suggests lack of fuel, does anyone have any ideas as to what is causing this.

A few questions:
What colour is the smoke?
What make of glow plugs were fitted?
Can you hear the glow plug relay click off about 30 seconds after switching the ignition on if you don't start the car?
And a couple of things to do:
Check that there is actually voltage to the glow plugs when switching on the ignition (a test bulb or volt meter).
Does it start better if you pump the fuel primer bulb a few times before trying to start it?

Hi (Scorbs?)
Has this fault developed gradually, or suddenly? Have you checked the glowplug timer is working correctly - it should power them for a few minutes after startup - dunno exact time for a Xantia - Anders will probably step in with this. Stick a meter on one of the glowplug terminals after starting.

The smoke is blue, and its been doing it since I bought the car last november, The glow plugs seem fine (replaced them not that long ago when it didn't want to go at all).
My last xantia, a 1.9 td saloon did the same thing but only occassionly, so it didn't bother me plus it had done 200K.
It does seem better if I open the throttle a bit.
It is possible that just one of the plugs is not working properly?
Could it be as simply as not enough fuel?
The turbo seems noisy compared to my last xantia, could it be anything to do with the turbo?

Blue smoke could be oil being burnt which would point to it being a turbo seal problem. The fact that it smokes after standing a while could suggest that the turbo seals weep and oil accumulates which gets burned off when the engine is started. If it is using oil, this would be my diagnosis.

I would suspect the glowplugs first on a missfiring engine before investigating any other possibilities, making sure they are the correct type, are designed for post glow applications (Bosch 0 250 201 039 or Beru GN 013) for the turbo engine and not the normaly aspirated engine as those plug types can damage the glow relay and cause poor cold running performance, plus non post glow types will fail early in this vehicle as they are not meant to stay on for these extended periods, up to three minutes.
If you have got air getting in to the pump, you would be experiencing very difficult starting after overnight parking, so I would discount that theory.
