Richard - Thanks for the words of comfort - I think. I had a new low pressure pump under guarantee and my HDi has done 130,000 miles in 4 years goes like a rocket and is very economical- high 40's on long runs but nothing like my first diesel BX, the normally aspirated version that stopped dead when you took your foot off the accelerator; with this I got low 60's on runs. To put my Citroen ownership in perspective I have had 3 x BX and 6 x Xantia all diesels and the majority did at least 112,00 miles in 3 years. Never spent a penny on them except for brakes, tyres & oil. Had a problem at Xmas with the HDi when the ride height valve failed; unbelievably the Citroen replacement was faulty and caused a couple of false leads.

I have had problem with my BX it popped out that ball joint from hand gear shifter and it happend while we were in hungary (stuck nowhere it popped off and i somehow pulled into neutral with released bit)...
I took some wire from a road a pliers i borowed and pop it in and secured with wire (i was 18 fresh driver then but problem solved in 15 minutes and straight back to croatia
)
After that i drove it for about a month that way, then fix that properly...
