Scenic 2 Litre Auto

Unread post by JohnMilne »

I have had this problem for a few weeks now.
Its a P reg but with 108000 miles on it.
I have taken it to the local garage who thought it was an ECU problem and suggested that I took it to a Renault dealer .
Their diagnostics said 1 of the coil packs was down, but this did not fix the problem, their other suggestion was tight tappets !?
The idle is very rough
lots of vibration between 2500-3000 RPM
Back fires occasionally above 2750 RPM
will only do 30 MPH in 3rd gear.
will stall at idle if the air con is on and there is a hard lock on the steering.
I have replaced the fuel filter, air filter, plugs, crank case breather hose and run a few tanks of fuel with a petrol treatment to "clean and lubricate" the injectors.
I would be grateful for any suggestions

IT'S JUST A THOUGHT,BUT I HAD A FRIEND WITH SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH HIS FORD ORION.AFTER REPLACING MANY PARTS AT A COST OF £1800, IT WAS FOUND TO BE THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER.

I have just had all the plugs out and number 3 is very sooty. All the rest are normal. If the engine was not fuel injection and all 4 were sooty I would say the mixture is too rich. Could it be a faulty injector ?

I have had the exhaust check out, and it is leeking after the cat. between the last 2 box's. I have had the hole plugged as they want £350 for a complete new exhaust [:(] tick over has improved but it has not fixed it. I guess I will have to have the head off this weekend.

Had the head off. 2 valves needed replacing and the off side engine mount was broken! (Guess that happend when the dealer changed the cam belt)
This has fixed the idle and vibrations but the backfire is still there. Having the exhaust done as I think this is the problem

Is the one plug still showing signs of running rich. If so, maybe the associated injector should be removed and be ultrasonically cleaned.

No, all the plugs have the same slight brownish tint.

The new exhaust did nor make any differnce [:(] . Have had it put back on the diagnostics at the local garage, and they say its perfect and the exhaust emissions are well inside the legal requirements.
Any ideas anyone?
