peugeot 406 1.9dt engine knock

Post by leerichmond2000 »

i have a pug 406 1.9dt which i think may have a big end knock but not sure, the knock is a low know which is comeing from lower down the engine, you only can hear it slightly when at tickover slightly when standing outside the car, it started when the car was overfilled with oil and it revved on its own engine oil, it has been 6 month since then and aint got any worse, do you think it anything to be concerned about and if it was a big end wouldnt the big end have gone by now?

Have you checked the timing? The 1.9 engines are low clearance engines, so if the timing is off even a little, then the knocking noise could be the cylinder/s slapping the valve.
If you can get hold of a Timing light... then I suggest doing so... because if the problem is left for too long it could damage the engine head. A friend of mine bought an Alfa Romeo that has to have all new valves and fittings because the previous owner left this problem too long.
Good Luck!

Not necessarily - we had an Escort TD van with nearly 200k on the clock where I last worked and that had a big end knock and rumble when I started there in 1999. It was still running ok when I left 3 months ago.

If its big end knock it should get louder as you rev the engine.
Have you looked at the belt pulleys especialy the crankshaft pulley and checked for any loose bolts.
