Intercooler?
A number of people tell me that my Xantia should have an intercooler. As far as I can see it doesn't. It's a 96 1.9td sx. If some Xantias do is it viable & worthwhile to upgrade mine using bits from a breakers?

My 94 L reg Xantia 1.9TD's intercooler is in front of the radiator, and is quite well hidden from the 'top' of the car unless you know what you're looking for.
You should see a number of air pipes from the front, over the engine, to the turbo / inlet at the rear.
These pipes will appear to come from half way down the radiator ( both sides ), although if you look carefully, they're connected to the intercooler in front of the radiator.
Mat.

We did have the light pressure turbo in the UK for a while, they were badged "1.9 SD" on the side as opposed to "Turbo D", but I think they were only available to fleet buyers. I've only ever seen one of these models though, they weren't very popular.
Confusingly, due to a clerical error at the DVLA, my 1.9 Turbo D was originally registered as a 1.9 SD and it was shown as this on the logbook. It took a lot of hassle to get them to amend it, and insurance company databases still bring the wrong model up when my reg no. is entered.

I have seen a Xantia TD with its intercooler on the top of the engine like a BX. I was mildly surprised as I thought that they were all in front somewhere and the only reason the BX one was there was that there was no where else to put it, and that one of the purposes of the longer bonnet on the Xantia was to gain more underbonnet room. I think the car would have been early (L reg?).
An inertcooler is desireable and gives what is basically free power. I think there were some Peugeot 205 turbos using the 1769? cc engine that produced about 7 hp less than the intercooled version.
Definitely worth fitting. Some people say that even better results are obtained by fitting better ones than those used by manufacturers.
