What would you do now?

Unread post by ozfrog »

I’ve been considering purchasing a replacement for my 307 so that I can tow our very small caravan more easily. The 307 is fine power-wise, but I think that, even considering my intense dislike of automatic transmissions, they do make towing a lot easier.
Plus, my wife was brought up in the USA - and that should tell you everything about her driving skills!

Her first generation 3008 handles the towing very nicely, so I’ve been considering getting a later model 3008, amongst other models. When I saw a 2018 model 3008 for sale for $3000, my interest was piqued, but I also thought that there had to be a mistake. Most 3008s of that year model sell for upwards of $13500. This one was a top-of the-range GT Line. I made contact with the seller and sadly there was no mistake. The car has major problems.

I have been sent the information that the Peugeot dealership has provided to the current owner, and I have tried to upload it here, but so far without success.

My topic title is, “What would you do now?” is not asking for advice for me - yet! I'm asking for advice for the current owner. She has to make a decision very quickly and tell the dealership of her intentions. She has asked me for advice, but I'm lost. I'm turning to you experts!

The second file is the major services and repairs that have been done since she has owned the car - about 5 years.

The first one is a PDF of the video that the dealer took of the inside of the engine. Or that’s what she said to me. I didn’t know that was possible! Unfortunately, I can’t find a way to upload the video itself. If there is a way, I’d be grateful if someone would enlighten me. I’m happy to admit that I’m blind (at 0140 hours on a Friday!).

I would get a price to replace the engine whether new or used and then decide if the car is worth repairing compared to replacing the car. At 180k km there may be other things that are due to be going wrong so could be a good time to change depending on funds.

To get a video on the Forum the easiest way is to upload it to Youtube, for which you need a Youtube account, and then post the link here. :)

At those prices I'd suggest an engine swap, it would also give easier access to anything else that needs doing, as long as the car is solid it should work out financially better in the long run. My C8 is 20 years old, showing 120k miles which is roughly 180k km, the body is solid and the engine has only done roughly 70k miles as it was a replacement. So the question is, do you like the car enough to keep it going? If not, Is there a better suited vehicle for your needs?.

She never answered my question about whether she liked the car enough to keep it going, so I'll never know that from her perspective. I suspect that once bitten, twice shy. I couldn't even get an answer about whether this was her first Peugeot, or even her first French car.

She was very thankful for the advice, but has ultimately decided to ask Peugeot "and see if they can give me anything for it, or I’ll organise someone to take it for maybe a couple of thousand, not liking my chances, though."

I quoted your post because I want to know what a C8 is, please!

It might to you, but it doesn't to me.

First, my French language skills are not that good right now. Second, none of those models (pictures tell a thousand words) have ever come to Australia.

At the top right of the Wiki page is a language selection box, simply click on English and all will be revealed!! :)

Clicking that language selection box had English, not Australian. The language is (mostly) the same, but the vehicles available in the two countries are not.

We still didn't get any of those models in Australia.

To be fair it's not very common in England, it's a love or hate it car/van. I love it for the leg room as all rear seats are removable in an easy way. I've taken the middle row out and put the kids in the back so they've got plenty of leg room, plus I can't hear there arguments.

When my children were young, my (now ex) wife and I bought a Peugeot 604. Three young children and a wife often meant that we had a lot of luggage to carry when we went on holiday. The 604’s boot is huge, so it was an ideal car for us as a family. The 604’s long legs also made it an ideal car for long drives this country demands.

But before purchasing the car, my wife and joked that if the children started fighting in the back of the car, we could easily fit all three of them into the boot and take the luggage from the boot and put it into the car.

In case anyone is thinking about chasing us up to get us charged with child abuse, no, we never did that to our children. We never even came close to the point where we even thought about it.
Cheers,
Andrew
