Can you identify this component?

Post by Argos69 »

After delighting myself with the success of my new drop link installation on my C5 Tourer. I returned to the exact same place this morning and found the rubber component on the photo, laying on the ground.

It is about 14mm in diameter and 18mm long, with a 10mm hole, which narrows at the tapered end.

Puzzled, I looked underneath with a torch and not only can I not see a place where it came from, I can't see another on either side. I'd thought about bleed nipple covers, but they're all there. Any good ideas folks?

Can't help with the part but ... I remember a similar dilemma a long time ago, spent ages wondering what a leftover 'part' was. Turned out it was a rubber insert that had fallen out of my spark plug socket. So, any chance it was from the toolbox rather than the car? Did any of the new components come with a thread protector as part of the packaging?

Hi Richard.
Good idea but no, unfortunately. No thread protectors supplied and nothing on the tools. When I picked it up it was really dirty, like the rest of the underside, so I think it "lived" under there somewhere.

"Famous disgraced and jailed serial abuser Australian" - ah yes that's the one!

A right click and google lens search on the photo comes back with what looks identical and again is a spark plug socket insert so may be it has been there for some time and dropped off now. If there was one on the other side maybe that dropped off a long time ago. Another possibility is a drain from the air con unit or floor.

Full marks and a shiny new "Croissant Voucher" to each of you chaps for solving the mystery!

I knew it was "fresh" to the site and I thought I'd checked under the car and all my tools yesterday. I dismissed the idea of a spark plug socket insert, because I didn't use any (and haven't had a petrol car for decades), BUT! on closer examination, the shiny blue 17mm Halfords "Alloy wheel socket" that I used to remove the wheels, has a recess up in its extremities (ooo, errrr, matron!) and lo and behold, the wee rubber gismo fits perfectly!

Genuine gratitude goes out to you for that. I'd convinced myself it was from some important suspension fluid pipe.
