C5 x7 leaking after rack replacement

Unread post by Agour »

Hi all!

Just had a rack replacement on my C5 x7.

Had a slow leak on it before, with some of it certainly coming from the pinion seal.

However, the leak has gotten worse since the replacement.

After reading around, it looks like it's probably one of the pipes.

Can anyone advise what the part numbers are for the pipes?

Car is going back to the garage on Friday to diagnose, but I'd like to have some part numbers in advance just in case I need to order something :)

Vin is VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

Thanks!

There is quite a lot written on here regarding the two pipes that come across from the passenger side to the bottom of the steering column.
They come as a pair and have a fitting with two small "O" rings and a single fixing bolt. (Who thought that up?)
This does leak, that is, if it is not the original pinion seal which should have been bench tested before assembly onto the car.
I have a feeling that the two pipes are no longer available but you will read that slightly larger "O" rings of the correct rubber type could create a seal.
Hope that helps.
Andy.
If it can happen it will.

Turns out it wasn't the pipes at all...

One of the seals on the new rack has failed. The CV boot was filling up with lds fluid.

Spoke to the supplier and they'll send another unit out.

Apparently it can happen if the system isn't flushed out, or if there's an air lock.

The mechanic assured me he did everything right... So who knows.
