Reviving tired plastic
I was wondering if anyone has a tip on how to improve the look of old faded plastic surfaces, mostly interior, for instance dash coverings and door panel tops. I don't really want to spend a tenner or more on some "magic" liquid that doesn't really work if there is something simple that does the job better and costs less. I have had no luck in years past trying to get exterior black plastic parts looking fresh once they have been sun bleached to a dull grey.
Absolutely hate modern cars and being ripped off by garages that play parts roulette.

Have you tried a heat gun?

Got to 100% disagree Mick = long term plan for more damage.

That can work on black plastic bumpers that have gone grey or white in patches if applied carefully. I wouldn't use it on anything internal and certainly not on any soft plastics.

Re: Reviving tired plastic
This is how to use the heat gun:
2. Heat Gun Method
Another effective way to restore sun-damaged plastic is using a heat gun. This method works best for slightly faded or discolored surfaces.
a. Clean the affected area with soap and water.
b. Turn on your heat gun and set it at a low temperature (around 212°F or 100°C). Make sure you work in well-ventilated areas and wear appropriate safety gear such as gloves and goggles.
c. Hold the heat gun around 5 inches away from the damaged surface, moving it continuously over the area in circular motions.
d. The heat will gently restore the color and appearance of the plastic. Be careful not to overheat or keep the gun stationary for too long, as this can risk melting or warping the material.
e. Allow the plastic to cool down before touching it.
Worth a try before spending anything!

Re: Reviving tired plastic
As it forces a leaching of plasticisers which damages/breaks down the linked molecules of plastics Mick, I would class that method as a quick fix for a quick sale by Arthur Dailly Car Sales Ltd (being kind)....it is IMHO a terrible method to recommend unless the quick sale is what you want.
Note: I have experimented with a heat gun, IMHO it is not good. Each to his own I suppose but I would not say a Emoji Smile is a recommendation qualifier
IF the poster wants to stick to a £10 budget fine, other trim dressings are available but they do not last as long/give such good long term results as the use simple oils or waxes with coloured fillers = they wash off with time, often one wash. Spend now save longer

Re: Reviving tired plastic
I assume you meant Arthur Daley there Alasdair but I can confirm that I treated my Delica's bumpers with a heat gun when I bought it and they were still.looking fine when I sold it three years later. Good enough for a free fix for me!!

Thanks for the suggestions folks. I think I will just live with it as it is. Not prepared to play product roulette until I find one that lives up to the advertising BS.
