C2 Siemens VDO RD4 head unit wiring?

Unread post by octinum »

TL; DR: A 2004 C2, a Siemens VDO RD4 unit, short connector harness that fits, but the car doesn't have the connectors that we would connect the short harness to. Looking for wiring information, and if possible, something with wire colors to crimp to the short harness we have, and from there, to the RD4 head unit.

Full story:

I'm helping out a young C2 owner in his quest to restore his car, but I am unfamiliar with C2. So thought I'd ask here.

The C2 in question is a 2004. Yet another case of car electrics butchering in Turkey, a previous owner had the head unit replaced with a generic one. Whoever installed the generic head unit simply cut the original connectors and threw them away (or more possibly, took for themselves to sell to someone else). So the car does not have the original connectors; it's just a bunch of cables, some connected to the generic unit (likely supply, ground, speakers), some dangling. And "connected" in this context of course means "twisted and taped".

Our young C2 owner found an original head unit, which says "Siemens VDO RD4" on the back. I think this is the earlier kind, before Continental bought out Siemens VDO (I saw units that say Continental as well). He later got a short cable harness with connectors that fit on the back of the head unit.

If I could find which cable goes to which connector at the back of the unit, I could connect the wiring properly with crimp tools. No luck so far tho. Any ideas?

Poorly formatted, but this is the pinout I worked from for an RD4-RD45 conversion.
Diagrams of the connector are freely available off the internet.

An RD4 will work but you wont have any fancy stuff like steering wheel controls and you won't get any display data, like radio station or cd track.
If you want it to be fully compatible, you will need to get an RD3 or a radio that is "VAN BUS compatible" (you have a better chance of finding rocking horse s#!t).
If you procced with the RD4, only connect the speakers and power. You CANNOT connect ANY of the CAN BUS connections!! A 2004 C2 will run VAN BUS connections to the radio.
Citroen do not "colour code" their wires. The wires have letters and numbers printed on them to denote the connection.
I will try and get a circuit diagram within the next few days (if someone doesn't post one before then).

Thank you both! @shtu that's one great list. @ozvtr please don't spend any more time on this one; apparently he has the speaker and power already in the generic head unit plug. I'll of course help him crimp at leaast those, and check the dangling wires for him so the poor C2 doesn't catch fire.

I also donated my donor Xantia's headrests and he said they fitted directly. I'll teach him how to dye leather to convert those to black. I'll share how a C2 looks with leather Xantia headrests -but with fabric seats. :)
