That's that for another two years

Unread post by Vic Evans »

Mme's 12yo C4 today passed it's 2 yearly Controle Technique with zero faults except for the obligatory advisory that a front fog light is out of alignment. Gotta find something I guess.
I can't take the credit for this success as the car is looked after by our very reasonable & helpful local Citroen agency.
CT cost 87 euros/£75 for two years. How much is it in the UK these days?

£54.85 for a UK car MOT test.... and that price hasn't risen in years.
There were murmurs of it going to a 2 year test over here, but I haven't heard any movement on that in the last few years. If it went to a 2 year test then that would allow the price to be increased, but I'd reckon that would lead to a deterioration in the condition of cars as the MOT test is the only time some cars are ever looked at #-o
If the £54.85 test fee was increased for an annual test then there'd be almighty claims that it hits hard working people hard etc, etc, ....but then look at the garages - most will be wanting to charge upwards of £100/hour for normal work, so only 'charging' £54.85 for 40-50 minutes work seems a little harsh. :-k

I thought that the garage got a subsidy from the government for MOTs which is how the price to the user is kept down? :)

Nope, no subsidy - the garage gets to keep the £54.85(/car) but they do have to pay a fee to get the MOT test onto the DVSA system.

I'd guess a lot of garages would offer lower test fees as they know they'll find something to fail it on  And others will hope they'll get a 'give it a quick service whilst you've got it' customer on their hands - hence they'll make a bit more money out of the deal.

I agree with Mick about the subsidy, as the garage I take my Wifes Corsa too, and all my previous cars, only does MOT's, I paid £55 last August, it has been the same for quite a few years. I had my car Serviced and Mot'd in March, the MOT on the invoice was only £45 including VAT.
According to UK gov "https://www.gov.uk/getting-an-mot/mot-test-fees. The maximum fee for a car is £54.85.

In France the Controle Technique centers are test only & do not carry out any spanner work so supposedly totally unbiased.
Our local test center is an Autocontrol franchise

There has been talk of changing the French test to annually but so far no progress on that, thank goodness.
Absolutely hate modern cars and being ripped off by garages that play parts roulette.

There was similar, but opposite, talk a few years ago in the UK of going to biannual tests but that went away. At the same time it was suggested that, as cars were much more reliable nowadays, the first test could take place after four years instead of three. That also went away.

First after 4 years here then every 2 years except for commercial type vans etc which require emission controls every intermediate year as well a 2 yearly Controle Technique.
