Vertical handbrake

Unread post by caeclyd »

I was doing a last bit of christmas shopping this afternoon and at my last stop I pulled the hadbrake on and it went vertical !
There seems to be some sort of grip but not a lot. I have a feeling that one of the cables may have gone.
What should I look out for ?
Rory.
ps nice job for xmas day I'm working so I'll take the car into the w/shop.

Are we talking handbrake on front or back wheels. If its on the front, whip off one wheel at a time. The operating lever on the top of the caliper will move backwards when the handbrake is applied if the cable is intact. Should a replacement be necessary, it's an easy job to do.

Don't forget the Xantia has three cables operating the parking brake, just incase the left and right ones look ok, there is also the primary cable from the handbrake lever to the equalising link.
If we are talking ZX, remove the plastic console from around the handbrake, the ends of both cables and the equalising link are then accessable.

rory,
if it's the cables to the wheels that has snapped, it might be a good idea to replace both of them at the same time, as if you mix old & new you might find that in a couople of weeks the other side will snap.
so i would change both left & right at the same time.
the job itself takes about 30-60 minutes.
