alternator not charging.
Hello, my father got gifted a 2003 C5 some time ago, it was some issue with the original engine that made it leak oil into the combustion chamber. So we have changed that, and we have almost got it road legal, the only issue is that the generator has stopped charging. It worked according to my dad when he got the car, but now it has stopped charging. I have made sure that the B-pos cable is connected to the battery and both signal cables are getting current through them. I am wondering what else kind of problem could have made it so it stopps chargeing. I have not found a diagram of the original alternator, so i dont know where it is grounded. Thanks in advance from sweden.

Re: alternator not charging.
It is likely that the brushes are worn out and can be replaced. Search 'replace alternator brushes' on Youtube and you will find some videos.
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

Re: alternator not charging.
When messuring between the blue wire labled CAB BAT + an the brown wire i get 7v is this too low or a better sign of worn brushes? I am worried that it could be a computer issue, so no matter how many generators i change i will still have the same issue.

Re: alternator not charging.
Have you read through this post, it may help diagnose your problem, also is your battery good, what's the voltage at rest?

Re: alternator not charging.
I have tried a couple different batteries, and the current one i have is new from the shop. It reads 12.6 at rest. I have tried the alternator with the signal wires unplugged, and it has not changed any thing. But i am guessing that the signal wires are used to excite the stator coil and not to turn it on or off. I am guessing that will have to remove the generator to do further tests.
